R36H WiFi, Bluetooth & HDMI: What It Has and How to Add WiFi (2026)
The standard R36H has no WiFi, no Bluetooth and no HDMI. Here is why the box says HDMI, how to add WiFi with a USB dongle on ArkOS, and what to consider if you need more.
The standard R36H has no WiFi, no Bluetooth and no HDMI or other video output. You can add WiFi with a small USB dongle and an OTG adapter on ArkOS, but you cannot connect it to a TV.
This is the detailed version of the short answers in our FAQ. It covers why some boxes and listings mention HDMI, which dongles work, how your firmware changes the steps, and which model to look at if you want WiFi built in. For the rest of the hardware, see R36H Features Explained.

Does the R36H have WiFi?
Not on the standard model. The Retrocatalog spec database lists the R36H with no WiFi and no Bluetooth. According to Handhelds Wiki, though, some units ship with built-in WiFi. Units without it have a mainboard pad where a WiFi board can be soldered.
To check yours, look at the original listing for a WiFi mention. If your firmware has a WiFi menu, open it with no dongle attached. If it finds networks, your console has an internal chip. Our board check guide explains how R36H boards and revisions differ.
What WiFi actually gets you
Every game on the R36H plays without a network, so WiFi is a convenience, not a requirement. On this console family it is mainly used for updates, which is how the seller of the R36H Pro Max describes its built-in WiFi. A working connection does not mean online play will work.
Does the R36H have HDMI or TV output?
No. The R36H has no video output of any kind. Handhelds Wiki lists it as "Video Output: no", and the USB-C OTG port does not carry video. USB-C-to-HDMI adapters and docks will not put the picture on a TV.
Why the box says HDMI
Two things cause the confusion. The box's printed spec list includes "HDMI-out, Aux-in, 2x USB-C", as reproduced in a hands-on review. And early promotional images showed an HDMI port like the one on the Anbernic RG35XX H, so many buyers expected one. Some listings and articles still repeat the claim. The console itself has no HDMI port.
If TV play is the main goal, the R36H is the wrong console. The last section points to better starting points.
Does the R36H have Bluetooth?
No. Wireless headphones and Bluetooth controllers will not pair. For audio, use the 3.5mm headphone jack.
A dongle won't fix it either. teamxnl's WiFi guide lists WiFi+Bluetooth combo dongles among the types that generally won't work. Handhelds Wiki describes one internal mod chip, the RTL8723BU, as Bluetooth-capable. A capable chip is not the same as working Bluetooth in your firmware, so don't take on that mod expecting it.
Which WiFi dongle works (and which won't)
The chipset matters more than the brand on the stick.
- RTL8188EU(S): usually works out of the box on ArkOS. The catch: listings rarely state the chip's sub-version.
- RTL8188FTV: works on official ArkOS once you install teamxnl's driver.
Skip dongles sold as WiFi 6, models with big external antennas, "free driver" sticks, anything rated 600, 1200 or 1300 Mbps, and WiFi+Bluetooth combos. According to teamxnl, these generally won't work.
teamxnl also warns that cheap dongle listings can change the model they ship. Confirm the chipset in the listing, and buy from a seller that accepts returns.
How to add WiFi with a USB dongle (no soldering)
This is the low-risk route, and you can undo it. You need three things:
- A small USB WiFi dongle with a Realtek RTL8188-family chip (see above).
- A USB-C-to-USB-A OTG adapter, because the R36H has only USB-C ports.
- An up-to-date ArkOS install. teamxnl recommends swapping the stock card for a decent brand and flashing the latest ArkOS image, because the driver is only confirmed on the latest version.
Check your firmware first
- Official ArkOS: RTL8188EU(S) dongles usually work out of the box. RTL8188FTV dongles need teamxnl's driver.
- Community ArkOS (AeolusUX's ArkOS-R3XS): according to teamxnl, this build includes drivers for these dongles.
- dArkOS: the teamxnl driver is currently not compatible. Read DarkOS on R36H before you plan around a dongle.
Not sure what your card runs? Our custom firmware guide explains the options, and ArkOS and R36H covers compatibility before you flash anything.
Steps
- Back up your SD card. The SD card setup guide walks through it.
- If your dongle is an RTL8188FTV, extract teamxnl's driver zip on a computer. Put the R36H's system card in a card reader and copy the "XNL RTL8188FTV" folder into the card's Tools folder.
- Put the card back, boot the console, and run "Install Driver" from Options.
- Plug the dongle into the OTG adapter, then the adapter into the bottom-right USB-C port. The left port is for charging only.
- Open the WiFi manager. On official ArkOS it is under Options > WIFI, or under RetroPie or System depending on your theme. Choose "Connect to new WiFi connection", pick your network and enter the password.
A card reader is the one tool many owners lack. The SanDisk MobileMate USB 3.0 reader suits anyone without a microSD slot on their computer, since it takes the card directly. If you're starting fresh with a new ArkOS card, the SanDisk Ultra 128GB and Samsung EVO Select 128GB are two reputable brands to replace the stock card. More picks are on our accessories page.

Check Price →WiFi not working? Quick checks
- Empty network list: the dongle usually isn't recognized. Reconnect it, reboot with it already inserted, or reinstall the driver. Then try a different OTG adapter or dongle.
- Dongle drops out: a low battery can stop the dongle working even when the console seems fine. Charge first. The battery guide covers battery life and replacement.
- Wrong port: only the bottom-right USB-C port works as OTG.
- Speaker crackle: a known R36S board issue with dongles. teamxnl says at least early R36H revisions don't seem to have it, so treat it as possible.
- Internal chip soldered in: one modder reports that ArkOS then no longer detects USB dongles. See the next section.
For other reversible checks, see R36H Troubleshooting.
Internal WiFi mod (advanced, optional)
Units without built-in WiFi have a mainboard pad for a small WiFi board. The job means opening the shell, unplugging the battery and soldering. It suits people who already do this kind of work.
Chips used or listed for the mod:
- RTL8188ETV: one R36H modder (alfaexploit) reported very poor transfer rates and connection stability.
- MediaTek MT7601UN: used by the same modder in a follow-up build, with the mt7601u driver.
- RTL8723BU: listed in Handhelds Wiki's R36S internal WiFi mod guide as compatible, faster and Bluetooth-capable.
Two trade-offs. The same modder reports that once a chip is soldered in, ArkOS no longer detects WiFi dongles through the OTG port, so you are committed to that chip. And if no networks appear after soldering, the board may be missing resistors or capacitors. Handhelds Wiki's mod guide, written for the R36S, links a community fix.
Skip the mod on a gift unit or as a first soldering project. The dongle route gets you online without opening the console.
Can you play multiplayer on the R36H?
Not wirelessly out of the box. With no WiFi and no Bluetooth on the standard model, there is no built-in link between two consoles.
According to the product specs, the USB-C OTG port supports controllers. The seller of the R36H Pro Max says that model's built-in WiFi can be used for local-network two-player between compatible consoles, depending on the system. On a standard R36H, anything similar would need WiFi added first and compatible firmware on both consoles.
Need built-in WiFi or TV out? Consider these instead
For WiFi without a dongle: R36H Pro Max
The R36H Pro Max suits owners who want WiFi without adapters. It has built-in 2.4 GHz WiFi, the same Rockchip RK3326 chip with 1GB of RAM, a larger 4.2-inch 1024×768 screen and a 3500mAh battery. It still has no Bluetooth and no video out, so it won't help with TV play. See R36H vs R36H Pro Max for the full differences.
For TV play: look beyond the R36 family
The Anbernic RG35XX H is the handheld the R36H's early promo images resembled. It uses an Allwinner H700 chip, with a horizontal layout and two analog sticks. It plays up to PlayStation at full speed, and N64 and Dreamcast run somewhat better than on the R36H, though still with limits. Our R36H vs RG35XX H comparison sets out its connections side by side. Read it before choosing either console for TV play.
