R36H vs R46H: What the R46H Adds and Which One to Buy in 2026

The R46H runs the same RK3326 chip as the R36H, so it plays the same games. It adds a bigger, sharper 1024ร—768 screen and Wi-Fi, built in on some units and by USB dongle on others. Here are the seller spec conflicts, how the R46H relates to the R36H Pro Max, and which of the three suits you.

The R46H is not a faster R36H. Both run the same Rockchip RK3326 chip with 1GB of RAM, so they play the same systems equally well. What the R46H adds is a larger, sharper 1024ร—768 4:3 screen and Wi-Fi. Some units have Wi-Fi built in; others ship with a USB dongle.

For most people, especially first-time buyers and gift shoppers, the R36H is the safer choice. It is smaller, its specs are documented in our spec record, and every guide on this site is written for it. If the bigger screen is what draws you to the R46H, also look at the R36H Pro Max. It has the same chip and resolution, with Wi-Fi as standard.

A note on sources: we have not tested or measured either device. R36H figures come from our spec record. R46H figures come from seller listings, cross-checked against handhelds.wiki, Notebookcheck and Pocket Retro Gaming. Where sellers disagree, we say so. Hardware like this is often sold under several shop names; our guide to R36H brands and sellers explains why.

R36H Pro Max

Bigger-screen alternative. Suits shoppers drawn to the R46H's bigger screen who want fewer unknowns. Same RK3326 chip, 1GB of RAM and 1024ร—768 4:3 screen sold as 4.2 inches, plus built-in Wi-Fi as standard, a 3,500 mAh battery, stacked shoulder buttons and a dedicated FN button.

Spec comparison: what sellers list for the R46H

On paper the two consoles share the same core. According to handhelds.wiki, the R46H uses the same RK3326 processor as the R36H: four Cortex-A35 cores at 1.5GHz, Mali-G31 MP2 graphics and 1GB of RAM. The differences are the screen, the wireless option and the body around them.

R46H specs vary from seller to seller more than most. Here is what the listings and sources say:

  • Screen size: most listings say 4.2 inches; one says 4.3 inches. Handhelds.wiki and Notebookcheck describe a 4-inch panel.
  • Resolution: Notebookcheck and most listings give 1024ร—768. One supplier lists 800ร—480. Another seller's spec table says 1024ร—600, while its own description says 1024ร—768.
  • Battery: Notebookcheck, handhelds.wiki and an Amazon listing title give 3,000 mAh. One supplier lists 3,500 mAh.
  • Wi-Fi: built in on some units, a USB dongle on others.

The pixel-density figures in the table are our own arithmetic from resolution and diagonal, not measurements. The R36H's 3.5-inch 640ร—480 screen works out to about 229 PPI. The R46H comes to about 320 PPI at 4 inches, or about 305 PPI at 4.2 inches. Either way, its screen is considerably denser on paper.

Performance: same chip, same game ceiling

The chip and memory are identical, so the R46H unlocks no system the R36H can't already play. On both, NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, GBA and PlayStation are the comfortable range. Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PSP and Nintendo DS are hit-and-miss on any RK3326 device.

Handhelds.wiki publishes community compatibility figures for RK3326 hardware, drawn from the GazousGit lists. They apply equally to both consoles:

  • Nintendo DS: about 80%
  • PSP: about 75%
  • Nintendo 64: about 63%
  • Dreamcast: about 59%
  • Sega Saturn: about 47%
  • Atomiswave: about 43%

These are compatibility percentages, not a promise of full speed. Some R46H listings and launch coverage suggest it handles most DS and PSP games. The community figures point to a more mixed result, and the R36H is in the same position.

Our PSP games on R36H and N64 games on R36H pages list which titles hold up. With the same processor, those results are a reasonable guide for the R46H too.

The screen: the real reason to consider the R46H

The screen is the R46H's main hardware advantage: a 1024ร—768 IPS panel against the R36H's 640ร—480 IPS. Both keep the 4:3 shape that NES, SNES, Genesis and PlayStation games were made for, so those systems fill the whole screen on either console.

Size is less clear. The R46H is sold as 4.2 inches, but handhelds.wiki says the panel is actually 4 inches and calls the 4.2-inch figure wrong. Notebookcheck also describes a 4-inch screen. Either way, it is a step up from the R36H's 3.5 inches. One Amazon listing also advertises OCA lamination.

More pixels mean sharper images and cleaner scaling, since each original game pixel is drawn with more screen pixels. They do not make any game run faster. Speed is set by the RK3326, and that chip is the same in both. For more on the R36H's panel, see our R36H display deep dive.

Wi-Fi: built in on some units, a dongle on others

Notebookcheck and handhelds.wiki both report a split: some R46H units have built-in Wi-Fi, others ship with a USB Wi-Fi dongle. According to handhelds.wiki, the later board revision HL-R46H-V20, dated September 2025, carries a Realtek RTL8188ETV Wi-Fi chip. The earlier HL-R46H-V13 revision dates from June 2025. Check whether the listing says built in or dongle in the box.

On a retro handheld, Wi-Fi is mostly for housekeeping:

  • downloading firmware updates
  • fetching games and tools through PortMaster
  • scraping box art and game information
  • local two-player on setups that support it

You don't need it to play games stored on the card. One handhelds.wiki user reported that Wi-Fi did not work on their unit. That is a single report, not a known defect.

Our spec record lists no Wi-Fi for the R36H. Its USB-C port supports OTG accessories such as controllers and keyboards. According to handhelds.wiki, the R46H has no Bluetooth.

Size, controls and battery

Body and controls

A bigger screen means a bigger horizontal body. If the console needs to fit a pocket, the R36H is the smaller of the two. Its spec record puts it at about 186 g.

The R36H has a D-pad, two analog sticks, A/B/X/Y, four shoulder buttons (L1/L2/R1/R2), Start and Select. Pocket Retro Gaming describes the R46H as a horizontal, ergonomic design with "linear-style" shoulder triggers. The R36H Pro Max uses stacked shoulder buttons instead.

Battery

Notebookcheck, handhelds.wiki and an Amazon listing title put the R46H at 3,000 mAh; one supplier lists 3,500 mAh. The R36H also has a 3,000 mAh cell, which its spec record describes as replaceable and rates at 5 to 8 hours of play.

The R46H drives a larger, higher-resolution screen from the same capacity, so there is no reason to expect it to outlast the R36H.

According to the handhelds.wiki teardown, the R46H opens with four screws on the back and its battery is held in with adhesive. That doesn't rule out a replacement, but know it before you plan on swapping cells. Our R36H battery guide covers the R36H side.

Storage and audio

Both consoles have two microSD slots. On the R36H, TF1 holds the system and TF2 holds games, and each slot supports cards up to 256GB. Per handhelds.wiki, the R46H has stereo bottom-facing speakers and a 3.5mm jack. The R36H has a built-in speaker and a 3.5mm jack.

Software and firmware: the R36H is the one our guides cover

Both consoles boot from a microSD card with a stock system. Handhelds.wiki notes two stock-OS issues on the R46H:

  • the scraper restarts EmulationStation
  • PPSSPP, the PSP emulator, has mismapped controls

It lists these community firmware options for the R46H:

  • ArkOS, using the RG351MP build with the R46H dtb and boot.ini
  • ArkOS R3XS
  • arkos4clone
  • AndR36oid, R46H build
  • UnofficialOS, using its R46H/R45H/R40XX overlay

The same compatibility-first rules apply as on the R36H:

  1. Back up the stock card before changing anything.
  2. Check your board revision.
  3. Use the build made for your exact device.

Don't assume a file made for one of these consoles will work on the other. A spare microSD card lets you experiment while the original stays untouched.

Our guides are written for the R36H. The approach carries over; the files and steps differ. Start with R36H custom firmware: compatibility first, then ArkOS and R36H: check compatibility first and R36H SD card setup.

R46H vs R36H Pro Max: almost the same console

If the R46H's screen tempts you, the R36H Pro Max is its closest sibling. Both use the RK3326 with 1GB of RAM and a 1024ร—768 4:3 screen sold as 4.2 inches. Handhelds.wiki even lists a single UnofficialOS overlay covering the R46H and the R45H, another name for the Pro Max.

According to Tech Tactician and our spec record, the Pro Max adds:

  • built-in 2.4GHz Wi-Fi as standard, rather than built-in or dongle depending on the unit
  • a 3,500 mAh battery
  • stacked shoulder buttons
  • a dedicated FN button

It weighs about 216 g and has no video output. For the full breakdown, see R36H vs R36H Pro Max: what's the difference?

Don't confuse the R46H with the R46S

The names are one letter apart, but the R46S is a different device. According to Pocket Retro Gaming, it uses a Rockchip RK3566 with 1GB of LPDDR4 memory. That is a different, stronger chip than the RK3326 in the R36H, R46H and R36H Pro Max.

Some auto-generated spec comparisons pit the R36H against the R46S, so check which model a page or listing actually describes. The R46S sits outside this comparison.

Before you buy an R46H: listing checklist

R46H listings vary, so check these points before you choose one:

  1. Resolution: look for 1024ร—768. Some listings show 800ร—480 or 1024ร—600.
  2. Screen size: treat 4.2 inches as approximate. Community sources describe a 4-inch panel.
  3. Wi-Fi: built in, or a USB dongle in the box?
  4. Battery: it should be listed as 3,000 or 3,500 mAh.
  5. TV output and "5G WiFi": treat these claims with suspicion. Handhelds.wiki lists no video output, and the documented Wi-Fi chip is the RTL8188ETV.
  6. Card size: both 64GB and 128GB variants are listed.

When it arrives, identify your board and back up the stock card before changing anything. Our board-check guide and SD card backup guide are written for the R36H, but the same habits apply. A SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSD card can serve as the backup or replacement card for either console.

Which should you buy?

Choose the R36H if you want:

  • the smallest, most pocketable option
  • specs documented in our spec record
  • a replaceable battery
  • a first handheld or a gift where every guide on this site applies

It plays exactly the same games as the R46H.

Choose the R46H if a bigger, sharper 4:3 screen matters to you and you can live with two things: seller spec variation, and Wi-Fi that may be built in or a dongle depending on the unit. Run through the checklist above first.

Choose the R36H Pro Max if you want the bigger 1024ร—768 screen with built-in Wi-Fi as standard, a 3,500 mAh battery, stacked shoulder buttons and an FN button. Our Pro Max comparison covers it in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the R46H faster than the R36H?+

No. According to handhelds.wiki and Notebookcheck, both use the Rockchip RK3326 with 1GB of RAM, so they handle the same systems. The R46H's higher resolution makes games look sharper, not run faster.

Is the R46H screen really 4.2 inches?+

It is sold as 4.2 inches, but handhelds.wiki and Notebookcheck both describe a 4-inch panel. We have not measured one ourselves. The resolution is 1024ร—768 in a 4:3 shape.

Does the R46H have Wi-Fi?+

It depends on the unit. Some have it built in (handhelds.wiki says the V20 board carries a Realtek RTL8188ETV chip); others ship with a USB Wi-Fi dongle, so check the listing. Handhelds.wiki says it has no Bluetooth.

Is the R46H the same as the R36H Pro Max?+

They are very similar, with the same RK3326 chip and 1024ร—768 4:3 resolution. The Pro Max, also sold as the R45H, adds built-in Wi-Fi as standard, a 3,500 mAh battery, stacked shoulder buttons and an FN button. Our R36H vs R36H Pro Max comparison covers the details.

Can the R46H run ArkOS?+

Handhelds.wiki lists community builds for it: ArkOS R3XS, arkos4clone, the ArkOS RG351MP build with the R46H dtb, and an AndR36oid R46H build. Back up the stock card first, check your board revision and use the build made for the R46H.

Can I use R36H cases and screen protectors on the R46H?+

No. The R46H has a larger body and a bigger screen, so accessories made for the R36H won't fit. Look for accessories made specifically for the R46H.
